Storm Front (The Dresden Files #1) by Jim Butcher
Storm Front (The Dresden Files #1) by Jim Butcher

Storm Front (4.25/5stars) has officially given me a new wizard series to obsess over. It will never replace Harry Potter—my millennial heart simply won’t allow it—but it’s running a very close second. I went into this book with fairly low expectations, especially as someone still easing into fantasy outside of the HP universe, and I was genuinely surprised by how much I loved it.

I picked this one up after Justin casually mentioned the words “crime” and “wizard” in the same sentence, and that was all it took. I immediately headed to Audible and started listening—and I was hooked almost right away.

The story follows Harry Dresden, a professional wizard who consults for the Chicago P.D. When a particularly grisly case lands on his doorstep, Harry finds himself being hunted in more ways than one while trying to uncover the truth. The blend of urban fantasy and crime investigation works incredibly well, creating a world that feels gritty, modern, and surprisingly accessible.

Jim Butcher is a fantastic storyteller, and his humor was one of my favorite parts of the book. The pacing is strong, the dialogue is sharp, and Harry’s narration kept me entertained throughout. There were several moments that had me laughing out loud, especially whenever Harry’s skull—an absolute menace in the best way—was involved. That character alone was enough to win me over.

Not everything worked perfectly for me, though. Lieutenant Murphy’s character felt frustratingly dense and one-dimensional at times. Her quickness to judge and lack of nuance made her hard to connect with, and I’m really hoping she gains more depth and personality as the series progresses.

One quote that perfectly captures the tone of the book:

“Paranoid? Probably. But just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean there isn’t a demon about to eat your face.”

I gave Storm Front 4.25 stars because it exceeded my expectations in almost every way. I’m officially invested—I’ve already bought the next four books in the series and can’t wait to keep going. If you enjoy crime stories with a supernatural twist, sarcastic narrators, and a wizard who lives perpetually on the edge of chaos, this is absolutely worth picking up.
