Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (4/5 stars) is a major turning point in the series, both in tone and in scope. The story expands the wizarding world in exciting ways and begins the shift from childhood adventure to something much darker and more dangerous. While this book includes many elements I truly love, it’s still probably one of my least favorite installments in the series overall.

Some of the highlights are among my favorite moments in all of Harry Potter. The Weasleys arriving at the Dursleys’ house is absolute chaos and endlessly entertaining, especially seeing the magical world collide so directly with the Dursleys’ tightly controlled normalcy. The Quidditch World Cup is another standout—vibrant, immersive, and full of wonder. It captures the excitement of the wizarding world on a massive scale and sets the stage for the darker events that follow.

The Triwizard Tournament itself is a fascinating concept, and each task pushes Harry further outside his comfort zone. The danger feels more real here than in the previous books, and Harry is forced to rely on his instincts, courage, and resilience in ways he never has before. This book also deepens the relationships between characters and begins to show the emotional toll of growing up in a world that is becoming increasingly unsafe.

Where the book struggles for me is pacing. It’s long, and certain sections feel drawn out, making the middle of the story slower than I’d like. While everything serves a purpose, it doesn’t always hold my attention the way other books in the series do.

Even so, the ending is powerful and unforgettable, marking a clear shift in the series. The events of this book permanently change the tone of the story and set the stage for everything that follows. I gave Goblet of Fire 4 stars because, despite being one of my least favorite in the series, it’s still an essential and impactful installment that plays a crucial role in the overall arc of Harry’s journey.
