Winter Nights at the Bay Bookshop by Jessica Redland
Winter Nights at the Bay Bookshop by Jessica Redland

Winter Nights at the Bay Bookshop (4/5 stars) was a sweet, cozy holiday read that felt like wrapping up in a blanket with a warm drink and a stack of well-loved books. What truly stood out to me were the descriptions of Icelandic holiday traditions. I’ve had a bit of an obsession with Jólabókaflóð ever since I first learned about it years ago, and seeing it woven so lovingly into the story was genuinely delightful. The atmosphere Redland creates feels magical without being overdone—quiet, wintry, and deeply rooted in a love of books and shared stories.

Lars completely stole the show for me. He was, without question, my favorite character—thoughtful, steady, and emotionally grounded in a way that made every scene he was in feel warmer. Cassie was another standout, adding a wonderful dynamic to the story with her brusque but undeniably loving personality. She felt real and grounded, the kind of person who might not always say the right thing but will always show up when it matters.

Lily, on the other hand, was more difficult for me to connect with. I really wanted to love her, but much of the time her character came across as immature, which made it harder to fully invest in her journey. While I appreciated her growth by the end, it didn’t quite balance out my earlier frustrations with her choices and reactions.

The novel’s love for books is woven throughout in a way that will resonate deeply with readers. One quote in particular captured that feeling beautifully:

“Powerful things, those books. Adventures taken, friends made, secrets shared, lessons learned. Why would anyone ever want to live a life without books?”

Moments like this are where the story truly shines, reminding us why we’re drawn to places like bookshops—and stories like this—especially during the winter months.

Another quote that lingered with me was,

“The unexpected things in life are often the best,”

which perfectly reflects both the spirit of the story and the gentle surprises it offers along the way.

Overall, Winter Nights at the Bay Bookshop is a heartfelt, comforting holiday read with strong side characters, a love letter to books, and a beautifully wintry setting. While Lily didn’t fully win me over, the atmosphere, themes, and supporting cast made this an enjoyable and memorable seasonal story.
