I really wanted to love A Heart for Christmas: My Christmas Advent, and the concept is ultimately what earned it a solid 3 stars for me. The idea of a Christmas advent-style story—unfolding day by day with emotion, reflection, and seasonal meaning—is genuinely charming and full of potential. Unfortunately, the execution didn’t fully live up to that promise.

The biggest struggle for me was how dense the story felt. For a book built around short, daily entries, it often felt heavier than expected, both emotionally and narratively. Instead of feeling reflective or cozy, the pacing made it harder to stay immersed, and the story sometimes felt like it was working against its own format.

April’s family dynamics were another major point of frustration. Her father’s sudden shift in behavior—doing almost a complete 180 and beginning to act just like her mother—felt abrupt and unearned. Rather than showing a gradual emotional evolution, the change came across as unrealistic and, honestly, super annoying. It pulled me out of the story instead of deepening it.

I also struggled with April and Eve’s friendship. The author clearly wanted us to believe this was a deep, meaningful bond, but it never quite landed for me. Their connection felt more told than shown, and as a result, the emotional stakes surrounding their relationship didn’t hit as hard as they should have.

Overall, there was a lot to want for with this story. The concept was strong, and the holiday framing had so much potential, but the character development and emotional execution didn’t fully come together. A Heart for Christmas isn’t a bad book—it just felt like a missed opportunity. I’d recommend it for readers who love unique seasonal formats, but for me, it didn’t quite deliver the depth or warmth it promised.
